Leaving Bali was sad (just ask Fábio), but it also meant continuing our adventures on this side of the world – something that I was especially happy about 🙂 🙂 . And Prambanan Temple was one of the stops while in Yogyakarta.

Arriving in Yogyakarta we met Marta and Oscar, a Barcelona couple with whom we became friends and discovered the best (and cheapest) way to reach the city center. We exchanged phone numbers and agreed to visit Prambanan Temple together the next day.

The next day we left our hotel, The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta MGallery by Sofitel, and caught the bus at the stop right out front. What we didn’t expect is that the trip would take a long time, meaning that we arrived more than an hour late to meet Marta and Oscar. In the end we weren’t able to meet at the temple that day.

We walked with a guy from Malaysia, who also refused to pay 50K for the ride, and arrived at the entrance of the temple where we chatted with a Chilean family who also accompanied us for a while during the tour.

The temple complex called Shiva Temple (part of Prambanan Temple) is simply marvelous, and literally leaves you speechless. The central tower, the so-called Candi Shiva, is the highest central tower in the Prambanan group at 47 meters tall.

We spent a long time in this part of the temple and in the meantime the sun came out. Next we went to the Lumbung temple with the Chilean family and took some pictures in this beautiful but small temple.

Bubrah temple was being renovated, so we don’t know how it looks.

Finally, we visited Sewu temple and, although the weather didn’t help with a threatening storm, the silence and stillness of the atmosphere and the almost complete absence of tourists hanging around every corner of the place created a sense of tranquility in the temple that made us enjoy it to its fullest (even energetic Noah!).

On the way to the exit we found a closed area full of deer where we stopped for a while.

We then decided to take the typical Yogyakarta motorbike, to give Noah a quick burst of adrenaline … I think his face says it all!
