We have to admit that our first impression of San Francisco was not the best. We drove straight from Yosemite National Park to downtown San Francisco, and unfortunately the area near the Town Hall and Market Street is a bit dirty and smelly with rubbish. It may be that we were unlucky and arrived just before cleaning day, but on top of that we also saw a lot of strange people (veeery strange…).
Ok … We´re sorry, people from San Francisco, but this impression only lasted a couple of hours. Once you get to explore this fascinating city you easily fall in love with it.
We spent most of our time enjoying the various views of its most famous landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge, and believe us… there are lots of ways to see the bridge.
But before going to the Golden Gate Bridge we spent some time at one of the playgrounds in front of the Town Hall so that Noah could let off some steam. We can take him to the best parks in the world, but in the end if he has some space to play freely then that´s his world. He even got a little present from one of the friends he played with in the park: a little ball (thanks Eliana 🙂 ).
From there we went to Mission District to see the famous, colorful murals.
At Alamo Square there are the famous Painted Ladies – beautiful Victorian houses located side by side to the delight of tourists.
From there we went to China Beach to see the Golden Gate Bridge from one of its most famous angles.
At Presidio viewpoint, near China Beach, we realized how cold and windy San Francisco can be. We couldn’t stay there to take pictures for more than a few minutes, as it was so cold and windy that we could barely enjoy the views.
Of course we didn’t miss the chance to go to the famous Pier 39 at Fisherman´s Wharf. This is a very vivid place with several stores, bars and restaurants visited by both tourists and locals.
After a short tour we stopped at The Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant – one of a famous chain of restaurants that serves all kinds of shrimps, just like in the movie Forrest Gump. We had fun and enjoyed the sizeable portions a lot.
From our table we also overlooked the famous old jail, Alcatraz.
That was the end of our first day in San Francisco. Lots of things to do still in the city and the next day is awaiting us.
